Def Leppard & El Paso, Texas
.....the "greasy Mexicans" comment...

"8 p.m., Tues., Coliseum, with Uriah Heep. Tickets $11 at Ticketmaster".

El Paso County Coliseum

First of all, I just want to say that I've been a Def Leppard fan since 1983 and I am still a fan today. This is NOT an anti-Def Leppard/Joe Elliott (lead singer of Def Leppard) website, nor is it an anti-El Paso/KLAQ or anti-Joe Loya/LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), anti-Mexican or anti-anything-else website.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, Joe Elliott came under fire for a comment he made in front of a Def Leppard concert audience in Tucson, Arizona, on September 7, 1983, while trying to rile the crowd in an audience participation bit during their song Rock of Ages. His goal was to make the crowd think that the crowd the night before was louder. That crowd the night before was El Paso, Texas, myself included. Unfortunately, his choice of words in arousing the Tucson audience was to refer to the crowd in El Paso as "that place with all the greasy Mexicans".

It took over three weeks for word of Joe Elliott's comment to reach El Paso and when it did all hell broke loose in my hometown and I was there for what followed.

As a Def Leppard fan I wanted to have a fan website, too, but I couldn't think of anything that hasn't already been said and done a thousand times over. I noticed there's not much information about the “greasy Mexicans” incident out there and it's probably because there wasn't much to read about unless you actually lived in El Paso and followed the story. I followed the story and I saved every article I could find and I've kept them all these years and I wanted to share them with you.

These articles are just published information that I collected from local El Paso newspapers, some not-so-local magazines, internet references, etc. I've also included the letters to the Editor of the local newspapers from El Pasoans giving their opinion on the matter and I've scanned in the actual photographs that were used in the newspaper articles. It's all here for you to read if you are interested, nothing more.

Please feel free to sign my guestbook and leave a comment, ask a question, point me to a related article I may have missed or view my guestbook and see what others have to say. Thanks for looking!
